Ostomy Appliance | Basic Application of Ostomy Systems
Ostomy Appliance
An ostomy appliance is an artificial
pouching system for the collection of waste, usually custom made with the patient’s
requirements in mind. This bag or pouching system is prescribed to individuals
who have undergone an ostomy. Irrespective of the surgery or the ostomy, be it
a Colostomy, Ileostomy or an Urostomy, the patient must wear an ostomy
appliance. The bag or pouch is fitted snugly onto the stoma which is the opening that
is surgically created on an individual’s abdomen, and is done in such a manner that
the patient experiences no pain. The bag can then then be covered with the
clever clothing hacks, making it unnoticeable.
An ileostomy is an ostomy where a hole
is surgically created on the abdominal wall, where the lowest part of the small
intestine or the ileum is then brought in through the surgically created hole
to form a stoma. This hole is usually made on the lower right end of the stomach
as the body cannot secrete waste. One created, patients are advised to wear an ileostomy bag, which is nothing but a pouching
system that enables in the
collection faeces and urine. The bag or pouch is available online too. Make
sure that the ostomy bag is cleaned frequently and changed as and when
required.
Colostomy surgery, is also referred to as bowel diversion surgery. This procedure is either permanent or temporary, depending on the nature of the disease. Individuals suffering from abnormality at
birth, trauma, cancer of the colon or rectal cancer or Crohn’s disease are
advised a colostomy. This is usually done when the pain and
discomfort of the patient is unbearable, with an ostomy being the only choice.
The patient is better off post a colostomy both mentally as well as physically, as the pain and discomfort is next to nil. Most patients are advised to use a pouching system for the collection of
waste and therefore are fitted with a colostomy bag.
When is an urostomy bag needed to be worn? Well, patients having undergone an
urostomy require this pouching system. This is a surgical procedure, wherein
the flow of urine is diverted into a stoma for body waste like urine to
bypasses the bladder, passing through the stoma and into an urostomy bag. This
pouch can be tailor made, keeping in mind the ostomy. It is also available
online. It must be fitted onto the stoma with utmost care and be thoroughly
cleaned intermittently. An urostomy is a permanent procedure that cannot be reversed and is advised in cases like cancer, trauma or a
urinary system defect by birth.
A surgery when
advised, can be both upsetting and worrisome for all the people involved. The
same is in the case of an ostomy, where the same fear is felt. There are three
types of ostomy namely, Ileostomy and urostomy and colostomy as you may know by
now. In the case of all these ostomies, there is a surgically created stoma, to which an ostomy bag or a pouch, that looks just
like a bag is fitted. This is done for waste collection. The patient’s relief
is huge post-surgery after undergoing the pain and discomfort the disease has caused
them.
A stoma is an opening on an individual’s stomach that is
surgically created. It is not age related and people of all ages can have a
stoma. There are distinct reasons for an ostomy,
or the creation of a stoma. Patients are advised surgery as the last resort, when
suffering from Cancer, Crohn’s disease, diverticular disease or even a
defect by birth. Stoma is found in three types namely Colostomy, Ileostomy as
well as Urostomy. All these surgeries are performed when the patient is unable
to pass waste from the body in the form of faeces or urine and are pretty much
the same with a few differences.
There are three main types of stoma, and it is important
for proper stoma care to be taken
post an ostomy. The stoma resembles the insides of our mouth and is usually
moist and pink. A stoma is swollen post-surgery but, let this not worry you as
the swelling will gradually reduce over a period. This can be anywhere between
6 to 8 weeks. The great news is that as the stoma has no nerves, there will be
no sensation upon touch. Stomas are never similar. They vary in shape and size
and from person to person. The stoma should be kept dry, cleaned regularly and
disinfected.
According to the type of ostomy, an individual/patient
is advised, the use of a bag or pouching system. If the question regarding a colostomy is weather an appliance is
available, and if yes, what then is a colostomy bag price in India? What must be kept in mind by us is the fact that the
cost of a pouching system/bag does vary, and is dependent on the surgery.
Colostomy bags or pouches are available, ranging from Rs.500 to Rs.7000. These
pouching appliances can also be bought online. Once fitted onto the stoma,
ensure that the bag is rinsed, cleaned and disinfected regularly.
